10 Ways to Get out of a Funk

Let’s face it, we all tend to get in a funk from time to time. For me personally, I typically drift into a funk around January. It’s the beginning of a new year and there’s an expectation to start fresh or make changes, yet I feel least inspired or motivated for some reason. So, when I start to feel those funky feelings, I try and pull myself out of it by doing a few things that make me happy and lighter. Here are my 9 steps to getting out of a funk!

1. Be thankful

The quickest and easiest way to snap out of feeling down or sorry for yourself is by sitting down and writing out what your thankful for. This usually immediately lifts my spirits as I realize how blessed I am. This can be as simple as writing out “I’m thankful for the food in our fridge and our heater that keeps us warm”.

2. Focus on your health

Although it can seem hard at the time, I find a long walk and drinking plenty of water always makes me feel better. Fresh air, sunshine and hydration do wonders. The worst thing I can do when I’m feeling funky is sit on the couch and do nothing. Sometimes you have to make yourself get going, but once you do, you’ll instantly feel lighter.

3. Practice self care

Book a spa day, nail appointment, blowout or whatever makes you feel recharged. Sometimes a little me time and a spa treatment is just the recipe for feeling more like yourself. If you can’t get out, make your own at home spa day and put on a mask and take a long bubble bath.

4. Vent to a friend

Sometimes the best remedy for snapping out of a funk is by having a heart to heart with your best friend. I love having a close girlfriend over for lunch and getting whatever I need off my chest in a trusted environment. I always feel so much lighter by the end!

5. Schedule a girl’s night out

A happy hour with some of your favorite gals goes a really long way. Especially now during Covid, getting out of the house and dressing up is majorly important. I find a couple glasses of wine and lots of laughter is the best medicine of all.

6. Go shopping

Put yourself together, throw on a dress and go shopping! Grabbing a coffee and popping in and out of some of my favorite stores makes me so happy. Also, buying a new dress or pretty blouse always brightens my day and brings me out of the dumps! Growing up, if something went wrong or I had a bad week, my mom would take me shopping and make me try on clothes in the dressing room and model them out to her. I would instantly feel better about myself. It’s not about the monetary aspect but more so about feeling pretty and important.

7. Create a happy ambiance

Fresh flowers and candles make all the difference in a home. If you’re stuck at the house and need some cheering up, buy some colorful blooms and light some yummy candles.

8. Schedule a solo coffee date

One of my favorite things to do when I’m needing some me time is to go to a cute coffee shop and spend some time on my computer for a couple hours with a latte and croissant in hand. I love listening so a podcast or some happy music and just scrolling through pinterest or online shopping. These days usually end up refueling me and sparking my creative juices.

9. Spend time in the kitchen

Cooking and baking is a form of therapy to me. I love turning on some Frank Sinatra and spending time in the kitchen baking something cozy and yummy. There’s nothing like warm chocolate chip cookies or blueberry muffins baking in the oven when you need a pick me up.

10. Do something for someone else

Last, but probably the most important, is to do something for someone else. Whether it’s baking something sweet and dropping it off at a friend’s house or finding ways to help strangers, doing something for someone else will always make you feel good. I find that when I step outside of only thinking about myself and focusing on others, I’m much happier.

I hope these tips spread some sunshine if you’re going through a lull and need a little lift!
